Benedict Arnold Was America's Best General — Before He Became Its Greatest Traitor

Transcript
Before he was a traitor, Benedict Arnold was the man who saved the American Revolution.
In 1775, Arnold led a brutal 350-mile march through the Maine wilderness — men starved, ate their own boots, died in the snow. He did it anyway. At Lake Champlain in 1776, outnumbered and outgunned, he built a fleet from scratch and held off the British long enough to delay their invasion by a full year.
At Saratoga in 1777, George Washington's generals froze. Arnold didn't. He charged straight into British lines — without orders — and broke their formation. That battle convinced France to join the American cause. Without Arnold's charge, there may have been no alliance. No alliance, no Revolution. But when Arnold came home bleeding from two battle wounds, Congress had already promoted five men over him. They accused him of corruption. They stripped his command. The man who bled for America was treated like a criminal.
So Arnold made a decision. He opened a secret channel to the British. He offered to hand over West Point — the fortress controlling the entire Hudson River, the spine of the American supply chain. If it fell, the Revolution could have collapsed. The plot was discovered only by accident, when a British spy was caught with Arnold's handwritten plans stuffed inside his boot.
Arnold escaped to a British warship in the night. He spent the rest of his life in exile — despised by Americans, never fully trusted by the British. The man who twice saved the Revolution died forgotten, in London, in 1801. History remembers his name as a synonym for traitor. But the wound that made him one? That was America's doing.
