Clive Campbell came from Jamaica to the Bronx, a tall kid they nicknamed Hercules.

In 1973 the Bronx was burning and broke, with little for young people to do.

At a party in his building's rec room, he tried something no DJ had done.

He played only the drum break, the wildest part, and looped it between two records.

Dancers exploded during those breaks. He called them b-boys and b-girls.

MCs grabbed the mic over his beats, and a whole new culture was born.

DJing, rapping, breakdancing, graffiti: the four pillars of hip-hop all traced back to him.

Hip-hop grew into a global, billion-dollar empire, but the man who started it stayed poor.

He never chased the money. He had given the world something far bigger: a culture.
