How does your shower instantly know to protect you the moment the cold water pressure drops?
Inside the shower handle is a pressure-balancing valve. It blends hot and cold by sensing pressure, not temperature. A little piston floats between the hot side and the cold side, feeling the push of each. Normally both press evenly and you get a steady mix. But when someone flushes, cold water rushes off to refill the tank, and the cold pressure drops. The piston instantly slides toward the weakened side and chokes back the hot to match. The flow drops, but the temperature stays almost exactly where you set it.
So that little piston is constantly refereeing a tug-of-war between hot and cold, rebalancing in a fraction of a second. It can't make the water hotter or colder. It just refuses to let either side win.
