The movie told you 300 Spartans held off a million Persians. The real story is both more complicated — and more extraordinary.

It's 480 BC. The Persian King Xerxes has assembled the largest army the ancient world has ever seen — historians today estimate around 100,000 to 300,000 men. He's marching to crush Greece. Standing in his way: a narrow coastal bottleneck called Thermopylae, just 15 meters wide at its tightest point.

Sparta sent 300 of its finest warriors. But they weren't alone. Roughly 7,000 Greek soldiers from a dozen city-states stood with them — Thespians, Thebans, Phocians, and more. For two days, they held. The narrow pass nullified Persian numbers. Every Persian charge collapsed against the Spartan wall of bronze shields and long spears. Xerxes burned through his elite Immortals. Nothing worked.

Then a local man named Ephialtes betrayed them. He showed the Persians a secret mountain path around the pass. On the third morning, Leonidas learned his position would be flanked. He dismissed most of the Greek allies — but the 300 Spartans stayed. So did 700 Thespians who refused to leave, and roughly 400 Thebans. They knew what was coming. They stayed anyway.

They died to the last man. But the delay was everything. It bought Greece the time to organize its navy, win the Battle of Salamis, and eventually turn the tide of the entire war. Over the grave at Thermopylae, the Greeks carved just eleven words: 'Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here, obedient to their laws, we lie.
