March 15th, 44 BC. Caesar had been warned. His wife Calpurnia woke screaming from nightmares. Soothsayers begged him to stay home. Even his own augurs read disaster in the omens.

His friend Decimus Brutus — not Marcus, but the man Caesar trusted above almost anyone — showed up at his door that morning to personally escort him to the Senate. Caesar almost stayed home. Then he changed his mind. He walked in, sat down, and refused the bodyguard waiting outside.

Here's what no one tells you: Caesar almost certainly knew a plot existed. His own doctor, Artemidorus, had handed him a written warning that morning — a scroll naming the conspirators. Caesar held it in his hand the entire walk to the Senate. He never read it. Some historians believe he chose not to.
