Meet Stephenson 2-18 — a red hypergiant about 20,000 light-years away in the constellation Scutum. If it replaced our Sun, its surface would swallow Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter — and stretch past the orbit of Saturn.
Stephenson 2-18 is one of the largest stars ever measured — radius estimated at around 2,150 times our Sun's, though even that figure carries real uncertainty. Scale the Sun to a golf ball, and this star would stand like a skyscraper beside it. Its volume is so vast you could pour in roughly ten billion Suns and still have room. Stars like this sit at the very edge of what physics allows — burning so fiercely and shedding so much mass through violent stellar winds that they teeter on the brink of tearing themselves apart. They live fast and die hard, ending in supernovae so powerful they can briefly outshine an entire galaxy.
