Right now, somewhere in this galaxy, a star is dying — and when it does, it will tear a hole in the fabric of space itself.
We're talking about stars at least 20 times the mass of our Sun — so enormous that when the fuel runs out, gravity wins absolutely. The core collapses in less than a second. Less. Than. A. Second.
What's left is a stellar black hole — typically 5 to 100 times the Sun's mass, crushed into a region smaller than a city. For a ten-solar-mass black hole, the event horizon — the point of no return — is only about 30 kilometers across. But at that boundary, gravity is so extreme that escape velocity exceeds the speed of light. Not even light gets out. And here's the thing: it doesn't suck like a vacuum. It just sits there — a patient gravitational trap that bends passing light and gas around it. In a binary system, it can siphon material off a companion star into a blazing accretion disk that spins at nearly the speed of light and screams in X-rays our telescopes can detect across the galaxy.
Here's what no one tells you: astronomers estimate 100 million stellar black holes drift through the Milky Way — dark, silent, invisible. The nearest could be just 1,600 light-years away. You'll never see it. But it's there.
