Vietnam Destroyed France BEFORE America Ever Arrived

Everyone remembers America's war in Vietnam. Almost no one remembers that Vietnam had already destroyed a European empire first.

By 1954, France had ruled Indochina for decades and wanted to crush the Vietnamese independence fighters, the Viet Minh. So the French built a fortress deep in a remote valley called Dien Bien Phu, and dared them to attack.

The French assumed no army could drag heavy artillery over those mountains. They were catastrophically wrong. General Giap's forces, helped by tens of thousands of civilians, hauled guns up the slopes by hand and hid them facing down into the valley.

When the guns opened fire, the French were trapped at the bottom of a shooting gallery. The siege lasted 57 days. On May 7, 1954, the fortress fell. A colonial superpower had been beaten by the army it underestimated.

The defeat ended French rule in Indochina and split Vietnam in two. That split is exactly what pulled the United States into the war the world remembers instead.
