By 1914, Europe's great powers had spent 40 years building the most dangerous web in history. Secret alliances. Mobilization plans written in stone. Armies of millions just... waiting. Germany locked to Austria. France locked to Russia. Britain locked to Belgium. One pull — and the whole thing fires.

Austria blamed Serbia for the assassination and issued an ultimatum so humiliating it was designed to be rejected. Serbia accepted almost every demand — almost. That one word gave Austria the excuse it needed. But here's what nobody tells you: Germany handed Austria a so-called 'blank check' — unconditional military support — before the ultimatum was even written. They didn't stumble into this war. They signed off on it.

And then the trains took over. Germany's entire war strategy — the Schlieffen Plan — required attacking France through Belgium within the first 17 days of mobilization. Change the timetable, and the whole plan collapsed. So when Russia began to mobilize, Germany's generals told the Kaiser: we cannot stop now. The machines are already moving. A war that politicians might have slowed down was handed to railroad schedules.

Gavrilo Princip fired the shot. But the war was loaded long before he pulled the trigger — by empires competing for the world, by generals who confused a plan with a destiny, and by leaders too proud to back down.
