A Water Tower Doesn't Store Water It Stores Pressure 🗼

The water blasting out of your shower is being pushed by a giant tank sitting high above your town.

There's no pump running in your house, so what forces water uphill into your pipes and out your tap?

The answer is gravity, stored as height. Most towns keep water in elevated tanks or water towers, sometimes a hundred feet up. Water is heavy, and all that weight pressing down from above creates pressure in the pipes below. The higher the water sits, the harder it pushes. That pressure alone drives water through the mains, into your home, and up to a second-floor shower. Pumps refill the tower slowly, often at night, but the tower itself does the pushing all day, steady and silent.

So a water tower isn't really storing water. It's storing pressure. Its height, not its size, sets how hard your taps run, which is why your top-floor shower feels weaker.
