Two bicycle makers flew the first airplane in 1903. Then the world spent five years calling them liars.

On a freezing North Carolina beach, Orville and Wilbur Wright lifted off and proved powered flight was real. But there were no crowds, almost no press, and the few witnesses barely grasped what they had seen.

So almost no one believed them. Major newspapers refused to print it. Even as the brothers flew circles over their Ohio field, a leading magazine called them bluffers, and the US Army turned them away without a look.

The Wrights stayed quiet, perfecting their design in secret. Then in 1908, Wilbur went to France and flew before a packed crowd. He banked, circled, and landed with total control. Overnight, the so-called liars became the most famous men on Earth, and the skeptics printed their apologies.

The hard part wasn't getting off the ground. It was convincing a world that had already decided the sky belonged to no one.
