A fully loaded 747 tops 400 tons. So what force rips it off the ground and holds it six miles up? Hint: it's not the engines — and it's not the old 'air races over the top' story.
Here's what actually lifts it. The wing throws air downward — its curve and slight upward tilt force a massive river of air down toward the ground. And when you shove that much air down, it shoves the wing up just as hard: Newton's third law. That downward turning is also why the air on top moves faster and drops in pressure — Bernoulli. Same event, two descriptions. Multiply that across a 60-meter wingspan and you get enough lift to beat 400 tons of gravity. The engines? They don't lift anything. They just push the plane fast enough for the wings to do the work.
And here's the kicker: the engines aren't what keep you up. As long as a wing has airspeed, it makes lift — even with dead engines. In 2001, Air Transat Flight 236, an Airbus A330, ran out of fuel over the Atlantic and glided about 120 kilometers to a safe landing in the Azores. No engines. 306 people. Zero deaths. The wings flew it home.
