So how does it actually make electricity — every time you start a car?

Inside are two electrodes in a solution — the electrolyte. One, the anode, is desperate to shed electrons. Chemistry forces it to oxidize — to dissolve — flooding electrons out the negative terminal. But they can't cross the electrolyte. They need an external path — so they race through the wire, through your device, and reach the cathode at the positive terminal. Meanwhile, ions drift through the electrolyte to balance the charge. Break the circuit, and the reaction stops cold.

Here's what breaks people's brains: a battery doesn't die from running out of electrons — every atom has those. It dies because the anode runs out of metal to oxidize. Which is why a dead battery weighs almost exactly the same as a fresh one.
