Your foot weighs almost nothing. Yet a light press stops two tons of moving metal. How?
That gentle push barely moves the pedal. So where does all the stopping force actually come from?
Here is the trick. The brake lines are filled with liquid, and liquids barely compress. So by Pascal's principle, the pressure you create at the master cylinder travels through the fluid to every wheel, undiminished. Now physics multiplies it. Force equals pressure times area. The caliper pistons are far wider than the one under your foot, so the same pressure pushes on a much larger area, turning a soft press into a crushing clamp on the brake disc.
But trap one tiny air bubble in that line, and your brakes go soft. Air compresses, so your push squeezes the bubble instead of the disc. That is why mechanics bleed the lines, to chase every bubble out.
