A Category 1 hurricane is tearing through. 120-kilometre-per-hour winds. And this wind turbine... just stops.
Not because it breaks — it stops on purpose. So how does a 90-metre tower of steel and fibreglass survive a hurricane?
Every turbine has a cut-out speed — about 25 metres per second, or 90 km/h. Cross it, and the survival sequence fires. First, pitch: an actuator twists each blade flat — feathered — so the wind slides past, and lift vanishes. Second, the brake: a steel disc clamps the main shaft and locks the rotor still. Third, yaw: the nacelle swivels to point straight into the wind. Feathered and head-on, the turbine goes aerodynamically neutral. It isn't fighting the storm; it's hiding from it.
Here's the sneaky part: the worst threat in a storm isn't just raw wind speed — it's turbulence. Irregular gusts load the three blades unevenly, and that can tear a rotor apart. So the controller watches each blade separately, pitching them independently to balance the load. The turbine is thinking its way through the storm.
