How You Can Turn Water Into FUEL With Electricity

Run electricity through plain water, and you can pull a fuel right out of it.

Water is the thing we use to put out fires, so how can it possibly become something you burn for energy?

The trick is that water is just hydrogen and oxygen bonded together. Drop two metal plates into water, connect them to a power source, and the current rips those bonds apart. At one plate, oxygen bubbles off. At the other, pure hydrogen gas collects. Capture that hydrogen, and you've stored the electricity as a clean fuel you can use later. This process is called electrolysis.

Here's the elegant part: a hydrogen fuel cell is literally this same machine running backwards. One direction uses electricity to make hydrogen and water, the other uses hydrogen and water to make electricity. It's a loop powered by nothing but water and current.
