Your phone can lock focus on a face faster than you can blink.
But how does a camera actually know, in an instant, when something is in focus?
Older cameras just guessed, nudging the lens back and forth until the image looked sharpest. Modern sensors are smarter. They split the incoming light into two views, a left-looking version and a right-looking version, almost like the two eyes in your head. When a subject is out of focus, those two views do not line up. The camera measures exactly how far apart they are, the phase difference, and instantly calculates which direction to move the lens and by how much. No guessing, no hunting.
On many phones, every single pixel is secretly split in two. That means millions of microscopic focus sensors are working at once, which is why focus snaps into place in milliseconds.
