It's quoted in boardrooms, rehab clinics, and political speeches, and it's been pinned on Einstein for decades. There's just one problem — no one has ever found it in a single letter, lecture, or paper he wrote. It's even listed as a misattribution in the definitive collection of his quotes.

Quote trackers at the Yale Book of Quotations and Quote Investigator searched it exhaustively. The earliest clear version isn't from a genius physicist — it shows up around 1981, in addiction-recovery circles, including a Narcotics Anonymous pamphlet: 'Insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results.' From there it spread — 12-step programs, self-help books, a 1983 novel, and finally the internet, where someone simply attached Einstein's name to make it land harder.

Here's the irony: it isn't even a great definition of insanity — that's a legal and medical term, nothing to do with repetition. And Einstein, the man who refined the same problems for years to crack relativity, might have pushed back on it. The person most associated with the quote may be the person it fits the least.

We don't really know who first said it. But we know why we handed it to Einstein — a sharp idea feels more true when a genius says it. That's not insanity. That's just very human.
