November 14th, 1960. Ruby Bridges became the first Black child to integrate William Frantz Elementary in New Orleans. The government sent four federal marshals to walk her in — every single day.

The moment she arrived, white families pulled their children out. Every teacher refused to teach her — except one. Barbara Henry, from Boston, taught Ruby alone, all year. She ate lunch by herself — just her, her teacher, and the mob outside the window.

Here's what most people don't know: Ruby wasn't only brave — she was praying. Her teacher once saw her lips moving in the crowd and thought she was talking to the mob. She wasn't. She was praying for them — even for whoever held up a black doll in a coffin to scare her.
