The Invisible Thing That Built Galaxies Before You Existed

Something invisible may have had to exist before you ever could.

Roughly five sixths of all matter in the universe gives off no light at all. We call it dark matter, and we have never caught it directly. We only feel its gravity.

Here is the timing problem. For about 380,000 years after the Big Bang, ordinary matter was locked together with radiation, and that pressure kept it from clumping. But dark matter ignores light. It could start collapsing under gravity far earlier, carving deep gravitational wells across the young cosmos. When ordinary gas was finally set free, it poured into those ready-made wells, and galaxies, stars, and planets grew inside them.

In the leading picture of cosmology, without that invisible head start, structure could not have formed in time. No scaffolding, no galaxies. No galaxies, no stars, no planets, no us. We may owe our existence to something we still cannot see.
