Long after the last star is born, white dwarfs will still be glowing, the final embers of the universe.
Around 97% of all stars, including the Sun, will end the same way: as a white dwarf no bigger than Earth.
Stars are not forever. Any star up to about eight times the Sun's mass will eventually shed its outer layers and leave a white dwarf behind. These corpses do not explode and do not vanish. They simply cool, radiating leftover heat for an almost unimaginable time. Trillions of years from now, new stars will stop forming, the galaxies will run dry, and the bright stars we know will burn out. But the white dwarfs will linger, fading through dim red into infrared, the last warm points in a cooling cosmos.
If anything still watches when the universe grows truly old, it will not see stars. It will see white dwarfs, the quiet survivors holding the very last light.
