Tina Fey — playing Palin alongside Amy Poehler's Hillary Clinton — delivered the line that became legendary: 'I can see Russia from my house.' The clip exploded. And something extraordinary happened: millions of Americans began attributing the satirical line to the real Sarah Palin. The parody had swallowed the original.

Part of why this happens is the 'illusory truth effect' — repeat something often enough and the brain starts accepting it as real, no matter the source. Researchers have actually studied this exact case: large numbers of Americans came to believe Palin said those words in a real interview, with the misattribution strongest among people who got their news mostly from TV and comedy. SNL hadn't just mocked a politician. It had overwritten her actual words in public memory.
