The REAL Reason They Cut the World's Biggest Bomb in Half

The most powerful weapon ever detonated — was only running at half strength.

The Soviets called it Tsar Bomba. At 50 megatons, it was over 3,000 times the bomb that flattened Hiroshima. And this was the toned-down version.

The original design was 100 megatons. But the fallout would have been catastrophic — and the bomber couldn't outrun the blast. A suicide mission. So they halved it with a lead core: less fallout, and a fighting chance for the crew.

Even at half power, the fireball was nearly five miles wide. Its shockwave circled the entire Earth — three times. Windows broke in Finland and Norway. A village 34 miles away was leveled. The pilot, Andrei Durnovtsev, survived — but barely, his plane battered minutes later.

The Soviets had proved their point: they could build something the world couldn't match. They tested it once, then never built another. They'd already won the argument.
