The 'states' rights' framing came later — the Lost Cause, a deliberate rewriting of history in the decades after the war by Confederate veterans and politicians determined to make defeat feel noble. They rewrote textbooks and raised monuments across the country, burying the real cause under a mythology so effective it shaped American classrooms for over a century.
