They NEVER Warned the Islanders — Castle Bravo's Dark Secret

In 1954, America detonated a nuclear bomb that came out two and a half times bigger than predicted.

Castle Bravo was the most powerful weapon the US had ever tested. Scientists predicted 6 megatons. It delivered 15 — vaporizing the island beneath it and blasting a 6,500-foot crater.

Then came the fallout — a radioactive cloud across 7,000 square miles. On Rongelap, 100 miles away, no one was warned. White ash fell from a clear sky; they thought it was snow. Children rubbed it into their hair.

The U.S. knew within hours Rongelap was contaminated. It waited two days. Three years later, it moved them back — to a still-contaminated island. A Brookhaven report admitted their return would provide valuable radiation data on human beings.

The Marshallese are still fighting for compensation; the islands are still radioactive. Castle Bravo also helped spark the 1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty. One miscalculation — generations of consequences.
