Before factories, your boss was the sun. Then the factory clock arrived — and your boss learned to rig it against you.

For centuries, work followed natural time. You started at dawn, rested at noon, stopped at dark. No one could cheat the sun.

Then the Industrial Revolution hit. Mills needed bodies on machines for maximum hours, so owners put up clocks they alone controlled — and most workers couldn't afford a watch to check them against.

And owners abused it. A Dundee factory worker later wrote that the clocks were 'put forward in the morning and back at night' — slowed during the shift, then sped up at lunch so breaks ended early. Workers had no way to prove it.

It took decades of strikes and law before the working day had honest, legal limits. The fight over the clock was never about minutes — it was about who owns your time. The same fight is still in your 9-to-5.
