Every time you press the gas pedal, something explodes inside your engine. Like, actually explodes.

But what's actually blowing up in there β€” and how does a controlled explosion turn into your car moving forward?

It starts with a tiny mist of gasoline and air β€” about 14 parts air to every 1 part fuel. The piston compresses that mixture to about a tenth of its original volume, heating it under extreme pressure. Then the spark plug fires β€” and the mixture doesn't just burn, it expands at roughly 1,700 degrees Celsius in milliseconds. That expanding gas slams the piston down with thousands of pounds of force. The piston connects to a crankshaft, which converts that up-and-down punch into rotational motion. That rotation travels through the transmission, down the driveshaft, and spins your wheels. In a typical four-cylinder engine, this happens in all four cylinders in a perfectly timed sequence β€” so you're getting up to 50 controlled explosions per second at highway speed.

Here's the part most people never realize: it's not actually the explosion that moves your car. It's the expansion. The fuel-air mixture doesn't detonate like a bomb β€” it burns in a rapid, controlled pressure wave. Real detonation, called engine knock, is actually a malfunction.
