You've seen lava. But the instant it hits open air, it's already changed — and underground, it isn't even called lava.
So what exactly is it before it breaks through? Underground it has a different name, a different chemistry, and it behaves in ways that would genuinely surprise you.
Underground, it's called magma — and it's not the free-flowing liquid people picture. It's a slurry: partly molten rock, dissolved gases like water vapour, CO2, and sulfur dioxide, and solid mineral crystals, all suspended together. Think less 'liquid' and more 'a scorching, pressurized smoothie with rocks in it.' It forms when pressure drops, heat spikes, or water from a sinking tectonic plate lowers rock's melting point — then it rises, not because it's liquid, but because it's less dense than the rock around it, like a bubble through honey. The key is silica. Low-silica magma is runny — it builds Hawaii's gentle shield volcanoes. High-silica magma is thick; it traps gas, pressure climbs, and it erupts explosively. Much of that thick magma never erupts at all — it freezes underground into granite, the rock in your kitchen countertop.
And here's the part that rewires your brain: 'magma' and 'lava' are the exact same material — the only difference is which side of the surface it's on. But that boundary changes everything. The instant magma breaks through, the pressure holding its gases vanishes. Those dissolved gases erupt out like a shaken soda, the molten rock transforms — and only then does it earn the name lava. Same stuff. One step across the surface. A completely different world.
