That rattling, dropping, stomach-lurching feeling at 35,000 feet? It's not the plane struggling. It's something far stranger.

So what is turbulence, really? Most people picture rough air — bumps on a road. But the atmosphere isn't a road. It's more like a river — and rivers have currents that tear and tumble.

Air moves in layers — different speeds, different temperatures. When two layers slide past each other fast enough, the boundary rips apart into tumbling vortices. Physicists call it Kelvin–Helmholtz instability — smooth 'laminar' flow collapsing into chaos. When a plane crosses one, the wing stops getting a steady push and instead gets uneven pressure hitting from shifting angles. The fuselage pitches. You lurch. But the plane isn't falling — in light turbulence the aircraft often moves only a few feet, far less than your body senses. And the structure is built to flex through forces much greater than turbulence ever delivers.

Here's the wild part: the most dangerous turbulence is completely invisible. Clear-air turbulence happens in cloudless sky — no storms, nothing on radar. It forms where jet streams shear against slower air beside them, and pilots often don't know it's there until they're in it. Worse: it's increasing as the atmosphere warms — severe cases are already up sharply since the 1970s.
