Copper roofs and statues all drift to the same green over time. So what's actually growing on the metal?
It starts the moment copper meets air. Oxygen reacts with the surface, forming a dark copper oxide layer, the same dulling you see on old pennies. But outdoors, the reaction keeps going for decades. Moisture, carbon dioxide, and traces of sulfur in the air slowly convert that layer into copper carbonate and copper sulfate compounds. Together they form a pale green crust called patina. Here's the key: unlike rust, this green layer doesn't flake off. It bonds tightly to the copper and seals the surface, blocking further attack from the air.
So that green isn't decay. It's armor. The patina is why copper roofs survive for centuries, while an iron roof would have rusted into nothing. The Statue of Liberty isn't corroding. She built herself a shield.
