Why a Fridge Magnet Dies If You Heat It

Toss a fridge magnet in a hot enough oven and it stops sticking. Cool it down, and the magnetism never comes back the same.

Nothing melted. Nothing broke. So how does pure heat switch off a magnet?

Inside a magnet, the atoms act like billions of tiny compass needles. In an ordinary metal they point every which way, canceling out. But in a magnet, whole regions called domains lock together, all pointing the same direction, and their forces add up. Yet that alignment is fragile. Heat is just atomic vibration, and as the metal warms, the atoms jiggle harder. Past a specific temperature, the Curie point, the jiggling overpowers the alignment. The domains scramble into chaos, pointing randomly again, and the magnetism collapses to nothing.

Here's the strange part: cool it back down and it stays dead. The atoms can realign, but nothing tells them which way to point, so they freeze in disorder. To wake it, you'd have to magnetize it all over again.
