Why a Nail Gun Fires Faster Than You Can Blink

A nail gun buries a nail in wood in about a hundredth of a second. No swing, no muscle.

There is no motor in there spinning anything. So what actually launches that nail with so much force, so fast?

It runs on stored air. A compressor packs air into a tank under pressure, often around 90 to 100 psi for a framing nailer. Pull the trigger and a valve snaps open, dumping that high-pressure air on top of a piston. The air expands instantly, slamming the piston and a thin driver blade straight down. The blade hammers the nail home in one violent stroke. Then a return system resets the piston for the next shot.

The power is not in the squeeze. It is in the release. All that energy sat patiently in the tank, then unloaded in a single burst, which is exactly why a tiny puff of air hits like a hammer blow.
