Why Bending a Wire Back and Forth Makes It Snap

You're not cutting it. You're not even pulling hard. So why does the metal suddenly give up and snap?

Metal isn't a solid block. It's a forest of tiny crystals, and inside them are atoms stacked in neat rows. When you bend the wire, those rows slide past each other along flaws called dislocations. That sliding is what lets metal bend instead of shattering. But every bend tangles those dislocations tighter, until they jam and can't move anymore. Now the metal is hard, but brittle. Keep bending, and microscopic cracks open at the surface. Each flex grows them a little, until one crack races across the wire and it breaks.

This is metal fatigue, and it's not just wires. The same crack-by-crack failure once tore airliners apart in midair, long before anyone understood that bending metal slowly kills it.
