That bird is sitting on a wire carrying thousands of volts. And it's completely fine. Here's why.

Electricity kills people. So why doesn't it kill birds? It's not that birds are special — it's that electricity follows a rule most people were never taught.

Current only flows when there's a difference in voltage — and it's always trying to reach the ground. When a bird lands on a wire, both its feet are at almost exactly the same voltage. With essentially no difference between them, there's no force pushing current through its body — and the wire is a far easier path anyway. So next to no current flows through the bird. It simply isn't part of the circuit. Now picture a human touching that same live wire while standing on the ground. The ground is at zero volts; the wire might be thousands. That gap — voltage potential — drives current straight through the body to reach the earth. Your heart and nerves become the path. The bird is safe because it never bridges two different voltages. It touches one wire, at two points so close the difference is almost nothing.

Here's the part that'll change how you see those birds. Electricians do the exact same thing. Crews servicing live ultra-high-voltage lines work from helicopters or insulated platforms, bonding themselves to the wire's voltage before touching it — making their whole body the same potential as the line. To the electricity, they're invisible. They've become the bird.
