Why Breaking a Magnet in Half Gives You TWO Magnets

Break a magnet in half. You don't get a north piece and a south piece. You get two complete magnets. Every. Single. Time.

How does a magnet just… grow a new pole out of nowhere? Where does it come from? To find out, you have to go somewhere most people never look — inside the metal itself.

Inside every magnet, atoms act like microscopic compass needles — each one magnetic because of the spin of its electrons. The key: neighboring atoms lock into groups called magnetic domains, zones where all the spins point the same way. In ordinary iron, those domains point randomly and cancel out. But in a permanent magnet, they've all been aligned — north pointing the same direction, end to end. So when you snap it in half, you haven't removed a pole — you've exposed a fresh face of that same alignment. The top half still has atoms ordered north-to-south along its whole length, so both its ends become poles. Same for the bottom. Break it into quarters, or a hundred pieces, and every fragment gets its own north and south — because the order runs all the way down to the atom.

Here's the part that breaks people's brains: a magnetic monopole — a pure north or pure south, alone — has never been found in nature. Not once. Back in 1931, Paul Dirac showed one would actually explain why electric charge comes in fixed units — and modern theories say monopoles should exist. Yet every magnet ever broken, at every scale we can reach, gives you two poles. It may be one of the deepest unsolved mysteries in physics.
