Why Engines Need 4 Strokes for 1 Moment of Power ⚙️

Every time you drive, tiny controlled explosions are happening inside your engine — but each one only fires once every four strokes. Here's why.

Why does a car engine need four separate movements just to make one burst of power? Why not just… explode and repeat? The answer is hiding inside the cylinder.

Here's the cycle. First, the intake stroke — the piston drops, and the intake valve opens, pulling in a fine mist of air and fuel. Then the intake valve snaps shut. Second, the compression stroke — the piston rises and squeezes that mixture into roughly one-tenth of its original volume. The tighter the squeeze, the bigger the bang. Now third — the power stroke. A spark plug fires, igniting the compressed mixture. The explosion drives the piston down with enormous force, and that force spins the crankshaft, which ultimately turns your wheels. But the cylinder is now full of exhaust gas. So fourth — the exhaust stroke — the piston rises again, the exhaust valve opens, and the burned gases are pushed out. Then the whole cycle starts over, instantly, thousands of times per minute.

Here's the part most people never realize: in a four-cylinder engine, the cylinders are timed so that one of them is always on the power stroke. You get four explosions per full cycle — perfectly staggered — so the engine never actually stops pushing. It's not four strokes and a pause. It's a continuous, overlapping relay of controlled fire.
