A lithium battery can sit quietly for days, then suddenly burst into flames with nobody touching it.
How does a battery that seems perfectly fine set itself on fire out of nowhere?
Inside every cell, a thin separator keeps the two electrodes from touching. But when a battery is charged too fast, or in the cold, lithium can pile up unevenly and grow sharp metal spikes called dendrites instead of tucking neatly into the graphite. These needles slowly stretch across the cell. If one finally pierces the separator, the two electrodes touch directly, and the battery short-circuits internally. That dumps huge energy into a tiny spot, heat spikes, and the heat triggers more reactions that make even more heat: a runaway loop that ends in fire.
Here is the eerie part: the puncture can happen silently, long before anything ignites. A battery quietly damaged today can wait days, growing hotter inside, until it finally catches fire on its own.
