That loud hiss from a big truck? It is the sound of a built-in safety trick.
You would think a truck losing its air pressure means losing its brakes. The opposite is true, and the reason is genius.
Inside each wheel sits a brake chamber holding a heavy coiled spring. On the parking and emergency system, compressed air does not apply the brakes. It does the opposite. It holds them off, squeezing that powerful spring back and away from the wheel. The spring stays loaded and waiting under tension. As long as the engine keeps the tanks pressurized, the brakes remain released and the truck rolls free down the highway.
So if a line bursts or pressure drops, the air can no longer hold that spring. It snaps forward and clamps the brakes ON, automatically. Losing air does not free the wheels. It stops the truck.
