Every wind turbine on Earth is facing the wrong direction — at least, that's what your instincts tell you.

When wind hits the solid tower, it leaves a churning, turbulent wake on the downwind side. Upwind turbines dodge it by putting the rotor in front of the tower, in clean air, slicing through smooth flow for full lift — while a yaw motor keeps the rotor aimed into the wind.
Here's what engineers argue about: downwind turbines self-align with the wind on their own — like a weathervane, no motor — and their blades flex away from the tower, easing loads. A few experimental designs still use them. But tower shadow is brutal enough that the whole industry settled on upwind — now standard on nearly every commercial turbine on Earth.
