That wind turbine looks like it's barely moving. But each blade tip is slicing the air at over 300 kilometres an hour right now.
So why does it look so slow — and how does this lazy spin power a whole town? The answer's hidden inside the machine.
Your brain judges speed by how long something takes to cross your view. On the biggest turbines, each blade tops 115 metres — its tip sweeps a circle nearly 750 metres around, yet takes about eight seconds per rotation. That's the slowness illusion: pure scale. Inside, that spin drives a generator — magnets sweeping past copper coils, inducing alternating current. And the largest machines have no gearbox at all: the rotor turns the generator directly — a direct-drive design with far fewer moving parts.
Here's the part that breaks your brain. One of these makes 15 megawatts — enough for roughly 15,000 homes — from moving air alone: no fuel, no combustion, no emissions. The input is invisible; the output is a city's worth of power, made by a 300-km/h machine that looks like it's standing still.
