Why You Get Hungry With Food STILL in You

Transcript

You can feel starving even when your stomach is not actually empty. Hunger is not really about your stomach.

If your gut still has food in it, what is making you feel that gnawing urge to eat right on cue?

Hunger is run by hormones, not by an empty stomach. The main one is ghrelin, made mostly in the stomach lining. Ghrelin travels through your blood to the hypothalamus, your brain's hunger control center, and switches the feeling of hunger on. Here is the key part: ghrelin rises and falls on a schedule your body learns from habit. If you usually eat lunch at noon, your ghrelin starts climbing before noon every day, whether or not you had breakfast.

So your hunger runs on a clock you trained. Skip your usual mealtime and the craving often fades on its own, because the ghrelin wave passes even though you never ate.
