Your wall outlet runs on alternating current — AC. Edison fought for direct current — DC. So why did AC win?
Wires waste energy as heat, and the higher the voltage, the less current you push — and the less you lose. AC can change voltage with a transformer: two coils around an iron core, no moving parts. Step up to 400,000 volts to cross the country, down to 120 for your coffee maker. DC couldn't. Locked at low voltage, it bled power to heat — Edison's stations died within a mile. AC reached hundreds.
Here's the part Edison left out: his fight wasn't really about science. He had a fortune sunk into DC — and to protect it, he ran a smear campaign, publicly electrocuting animals with AC to make it look deadly. It was never about safety. It was about money.
