NASA Debugged a Computer 15 Billion Miles Away

In 2023, Voyager 1 started sending home pure gibberish, and the computer causing it was 15 billion miles from anyone who could fix it.

A single message to Voyager takes almost a full day to arrive, so you wait roughly 45 hours to learn if a command worked. There is no reset button to walk over and press.

Engineers traced it to a single failed memory chip in the spacecraft's ancient computer. About 3 percent of its memory was corrupted, scrambling everything the probe tried to say. But that lost code still had to run. So they broke it into pieces and tucked them into unused corners of the aging memory, rewriting the software of a probe launched in 1977. Then they beamed the fix across interstellar space and waited.

Two days later, Voyager 1 answered, clear again for the first time in months. A handful of people on Earth had reached across 15 billion miles and healed a dying computer they could never touch.
