Your Gold Was Forged by Colliding Neutron Stars

The gold in your jewelry was almost certainly born in one of the most violent events in the universe: a collision of two dead stars.
In 2017, LIGO detected gravitational waves from a new kind of crash: two neutron stars, the ultra-dense cores of dead stars, merging about 130 million light-years away.
This time was different. Just after the gravitational waves arrived, telescopes worldwide swung to the same spot and caught it in light too. For the first time, we saw a single cosmic event in both waves and light at once. In the glowing debris, astronomers found freshly forged heavy elements, including platinum and gold. The collision had acted like a cosmic forge, hammering out precious metals in an instant.
It confirmed something staggering. Much of the gold and platinum on Earth was made in collisions like this, long before our planet existed. The ring on someone's finger is, quite literally, the debris of two dead stars smashing together across the universe.
