Earth Is Parked Near the HOT Edge of the Habitable Zone

Earth isn't sitting safely in the middle of the Sun's habitable zone. We're parked near the hot edge.

Picture the habitable zone as a ring around the Sun. We like to imagine Earth floating in the center. In reality, our orbit sits much closer to the dangerous inner edge than the cold outer one.

By some careful estimates, the inner boundary, where a world risks a runaway greenhouse, lies only a few percent closer to the Sun than we are. On a cosmic scale, that's razor-thin. If Earth orbited just slightly nearer the Sun, rising heat could boil the oceans into the sky and trigger the runaway warming that wrecked Venus. What keeps us cool isn't comfortable distance. It's a delicate balance of clouds, oceans, and carbon that quietly holds our temperature steady.

We tend to think Earth won the cosmic lottery by a mile. The truth is we won it by a hair, perched near the edge of the very zone that makes us possible.
