If the Sun turned into a black hole tonight, the Earth would not get sucked in.
This is a thought experiment, but the physics is real. Our Sun is 1.4 million kilometers wide. Crush all that mass into a black hole, and it would be just six kilometers across.
Here's the part that breaks people's brains. Gravity depends on mass and distance, not on how tightly something is squeezed. The black hole would have the same mass as the Sun, in the same spot. So from 150 million kilometers away, Earth would feel no change in pull. We would keep circling this dark point on the same orbit, at the same speed, as if nothing happened. Black holes don't roam space vacuuming up planets. You have to get terrifyingly close to fall in.
What would actually kill us isn't gravity. It's the dark. With no sunlight, Earth's surface would plunge below freezing within weeks, and the oceans would ice over.
