The most common kind of matter in the universe is something no one has ever directly touched.
Roughly five times more of it exists than every star, planet, and atom we can see, combined. We only know it is there because galaxies spin too fast to hold together without it.
We call it dark matter, and it is genuinely strange. It is not ordinary matter, and not normal antimatter. The old idea that it was just dim objects, rogue planets or small black holes, has largely been ruled out. The leading suspects now are unknown particles that barely interact with anything except through gravity: theorized WIMPs and ultralight axions. To catch one, physicists bury detectors deep underground, shielded from cosmic rays, and wait for a single faint collision.
And here is the unsettling part. After decades of searching, no experiment has confirmed a single direct detection. The substance that shapes nearly every galaxy is still, technically, a mystery we have never caught.
