The Big Bang made just hydrogen and helium. The iron in your blood? The calcium in your bones? It couldn't make those yet.

For its first few hundred million years, the universe held only hydrogen, helium, and a trace of lithium — no stars, no planets. Of the periodic table's 118 boxes, barely three were filled.

Then gravity took over: hydrogen clouds collapsed and ignited the first stars — tens to hundreds of solar masses. Inside, hydrogen fused to helium, then carbon, oxygen, silicon — all the way to iron, lighting up new boxes. Out of fuel, they exploded as supernovae, scattering those elements across space. Gold and uranium came later still — in a supernova's final seconds, or two neutron stars colliding. Over billions of years, billions of stellar furnaces filled in the empty boxes.

The calcium in your teeth, the iron carrying oxygen through your veins — forged in a star that died before the Sun existed. You're not made from the universe. You're made of it. Quite literally, the ash of dead stars.
